HB Junior Lifeguards Spring Break Program

As the days grow longer, signaling the imminent arrival of spring and summer, the Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division gears up to offer an array of engaging programs on our warm, sandy beaches. Kick off Spring Break with the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards, a week-long class running from April 1 to April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. This class is open to ages 9 to 17 years old and introduces them to beach and ocean safety. Participants will also learn lifesaving skills as well as enjoy some beach games, and have plenty of water time—the full week capstones with a major swim event and first aid skills development.

For those looking ahead to summer, the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards program awaits, spanning seven weeks with sessions from Monday through Thursday. Fridays offer a chance for off-site adventures and Surf Day. Prospective participants aged 9 to 17 must pass a minimum qualifier tryout, showcasing swimming abilities and water safety proficiency, including swimming 100 yards at or under one minute and 50 seconds, treading water for five minutes, and swimming underwater for 10 yards, at least three feet deep. For more information and to register for a tryout, visit www.HBSands.org

If your athlete is too young for these programs, don’t fret! The Marine Safety Division offers the Sand Crabs, a three-week class, Monday through Thursday, for kids ages 7 to 8. There are two sessions with a morning or afternoon class. The minimum qualifications for this program are swimming at or under one minute and fifteen seconds, treading water for two minutes, and swimming underwater for five yards, at least three feet deep. Tryouts are open at www.HBSands.org
